Small Cavern:
Roll on Chart #1 to determine the Width, Length and Height of the cavern discovered:
Chart #1:
Width: 1-D4 +1 spaces wide.
Length: 1-D6 +1 spaces in length.
Height: 1-D4 +1 spaces in height.
Roll on Chart #2 for the general shape of cave discovered:
Chart #2:
%Roll: General shape of cave: Remember, each cave is only in the likeness of the shape rolled.
01-13: Circle-like
14-26: Diamond-like
27-39: Hexigon-like
40-52: Octagon-like
53-64: Oval-like
65-76: Rectangular-like
77-88: Square-like
89-00: Triangle-like
Each cavern discovered will have a a 1 in 10 chance of there being a tunnel opening at a random location:
# of 10% chance checks checks per cavern --- : 1-D4
# needed to discover a tunnel opening ---------- : 0 (rolling a D10)
If there are one or more tunnel openings, roll on Chart #3 to see how far where each tunnel extends:
Chart #3:
%Roll: Tunnel extends:
01-64: 1-D4 spaces.
65-72: 1-D6 spaces.
73-79: 1-D8 spaces.
80-85: 1-D10 spaces.
86-90: 1-D12 spaces.
91-94: 1-D20 spaces.
95-97: 1-D20 x2 spaces.
98-99: 1-D20 x3 spaces.
00: 1-D20 x4 spaces.
Note:
Roll on Chart #4 for the direction each tunnel leads:
Chart #4:
%Roll: Tunnel extends:
01-13: North
14-26: North-East
27-39: East
40-52: South-East
53-64: South
65-76: South-West
77-88: West
89-00: North-West
Each tunnel discovered will have a a 1 in 10 chance of there being a tunnel opening at a random location:
# of 10% chance checks per tunnel --------------- : 1-D4
# needed for each tunnel to have an opening --- : 0 (rolling a D10)
- For each opening, roll on Chart #3 to see how far where each tunnel extends.
- For each opening, roll on Chart #4 to see which way the tunnel extends.
- After determining the distance and direction of the tunnel discovered, roll on Chart #5 for the size of the cavern chamber discovered:
Chart #5:
%Roll: Cavern Chamber Size:
01-06: Huge
07-13: Large
14-15: Legendary
16-20: Massive
21-38: Medium
39-00: Small
Continue doing this until all tunnels yield no further openings and chambers.
G.M.:
By doing encounter checks along the way, new sites, complex structures, secrets, encounters and other notable occurrences may be discovered. If you follow this, you will be employing a random, perpetual charting system that can lead to anything. Indeed, they have been the means of uncovering dimension and plane gates, passages into the depths of Utaemia, and hundreds of different results.
The G.M. doesn't even know what is going to happen, if he or she uses the random rolls to build Utaemia with. Thus, by faithfully using these charts, the G.M. can feel the sense of mystery the players feel.
